The Partners in Learning initiative with
the New Mexico Public Education Department's Rural Revitalization
program led to the discovery of the Rough and Tough Embroidery Company
based in Roy, NM.
The company is part of the state and Microsoft's focus on rural
revitalization; using the school as a catalyst for academic achievement,
21st century workforce development, and economic vitality.
Microsoft hired Rough & Tough high school students to provide duffel bags
embroidered with the company logo and theme, "Building Your Strengths"
for the US Public Sector Education Team offsite meeting.
The high school students did a fantastic embroidery job and completed
the work ahead of schedule.
The
Rough & Tough Embroidery Company has been going well
over the summer. They sell towels, shirts, caps, and other
products. In the beginning of July the embroidery company has made one
hundred and fifty bags for Microsoft. They also made shirts and caps for
Mosquero.
Juanita Baker, Jennifer Tompkins, and Danae Rigoni have
been running the business smoothly. Once Danae graduates she will be
leaving the Embroidery Company.
The
Rough & Tough Embroider Company’s future goals are
to expand the business, move out of the school and into their own shop,
and to hopefully get an additional machine.
Juanita Baker says “everything is going well, the doors
are always open during the school hours and anybody is welcome to come
in and check it out.”
Rough
& Tough Embroidery Co. is an embroidery business that embroiders
materials such as t-shirts, shirts, hats, towels, jackets, etc. The
company is run by students with adult supervisions at all times.
