And I don't want to. Although I had accepted Christ as my savior at
nine years old but I didn't know him as Lord. In my teens I began to
rebel against my parents and authority in general. I was often
depressed and began using alcohol and drugs, which would soon turn
out to be my undoing. It would be ten years before I realized I was
alcoholic, and twenty before I would discover the cause of my
depression was a brain chemistry imbalance linked to A.D.D. I was
jailed five times on drug and alcohol related charges before I
graduated from high school. Russ Ballew

Burson Family
- singers, Guitar, Violin, Mandolin
Dale
is a guitarist in Red
Stegall's band, and is a third-generation rancher
from Channing, Texas who has enough country to run his cows and
yearlings each year. He started playing music when he was 13
after becoming interested in the banjo; not long after that he
learned to play guitar, mandolin, and fiddle. He's played at the
Durango poetry and music gathering as well as the Dick Shepherd
Memorial poetry and song gathering and he's been greatly
influenced by other Texas musicians Buck Ramsey and Frankie
McWhorter. His son, Ross, plays mandolin and his daughter,
Brittany, plays violin. Most of the music they perform are tunes
they have written, or are old standards. The Burson family has CD's, The Burson Family Ranch,
a collection of original cowboy songs with some extra tunes
thrown in and Dancing With Daddy. Becki, Dale’s
wife of 20 years, prefers to stay out of the spotlight, although
she is noted for her beautiful singing voice in church.

Academy. Shalom
Ministries began in Santa Fe, NM in 1970 as a coffee house
outreach to troubled youth (hippies) in northern NM. The
cry of that day was for an end to the Vietnam war and PEACE,
therefore the name SHALOM. Since its inception in 1970,
Shalom Ministries has been an outreach to troubled youth in need
of answers to personal problems. Today, Shalom ministries
focuses on youth in New Mexico's juvenile detention centers or
who are on probation or parole. In Shalom's
Life Quest Academy outreach, volunteers develop lasting friendships with
hurting youth in detention. These much needed friendships
continue after the youth leaves the detention center.

Amarillo home and gently broke the news. Eric, a beloved son,
husband, brother and uncle, had been killed in action while on a

Loren (Doc) Mayer - Poet
Doc Mayer lives and works on the Morning
Star Ranch west of Roy, N.M. where the Canadian River escarpment
cuts down through the caprock. He's been an artist for twenty
odd years and has lived on his ranch since around 1985. Doc got
a Ph.D. in physiology at the University of Texas at Austin and
taught in the Texas A&M College of Medicine before coming to the
Land of Enchantment. With dreams firmly based in the late 19th
century, he found a place where his philosophy of life and
attitudes fit in nicely. "I love this area because the people
have more contentment and beauty in their lives than in any spot
where I've lived. The people are as open as the horizon and as
real as the grama grass."
Singer/songwriter Chuck Milner
has been involved in the livestock industry for over twenty
years. He's been singing as long as he can remember. As a ten
year old Texas kid, he received a horse and a guitar from his
grandfather. He spent the next twenty years weaving those two
interests into his craft. He has worked as a cowboy and ranch
hand in Texas, Oklahoma and Colorado, spending several years
running his own handful of cows.
Having served as an Artist
-in- Residence for the Oklahoma Arts Council, he has taught
cowboy songs and poems in the Oklahoma Public School system. In
2001, the Academy of Western Artists awarded him the WILL ROGERS
award for Western Music Song of the Year, DOAN'S CROSSING.
The native Texan now resides
on the Texas/Oklahoma border near Reydon, Oklahoma where he
oversees the cattle grazing program on the Black Kettle National
Grassland. Chuck, his wife Beth, children Hallie and Cody Ray,
are fourth generation Oklahoma ranchers, running a cow/calf
operation and Paint and Quarter Broodmares on their place on
Rush Creek. They also own the
Smoot/Hood
Ranch in Greer County which was awarded an Oklahoma
Centennial Ranch award in 2003, having been owned and operated
by Beth's family since 1901.
In 2004, Hallie and Cody
joined their dad playing traditional music. Hallie, age eleven,
plays the fiddle while eight year old Cody plays the mandolin.
Gary & Suzy Morton -
Artist, Speaker
Suzy was healed of blindness and now testifies and speaks.
She is sometimes used to give a word of prophecy.
Western painter, Gary Morton, sometimes likes to joke about
breaking into the art business by saying, "I've been turned down
by the best". While that could have been a truthful statement
early in his career, Morton can now talk about the flip side of
the coin - the fact that his work hangs in the most prestigious
of locations. For instance, a four foot by eight foot oil
entitled "The Simple Pleasures of New Mexico" was commissioned
by the New Mexico State Legislature for inclusion in the
permanent collection which hangs in the State Capitol Building
in Santa Fe. Morton is also a regular participant in the Wyoming
Governor's Invitational Show in Cheyenne which is held as a part
of their "Frontier Days Celebration", and a number of his
paintings were recently displayed at the Museum of the Big Bend
in Alpine, TX as part of their "Trappings of Texas" exhibition.
Morton is primarily a self-taught artist who has
honed his talent by spending numerous hours drawing the images
he has experienced first hand. A cowboy at heart, Morton earned
his livelihood as a ranch hand for more than ten years,
wrangling primarily on the Bell Ranch in Northern New Mexico,
where he eventually earned the position of wagon boss, the
number two job on the spread.
Although he is now a full time artist, Morton
still spends at least six weeks out of the year working as a
ranch hand. "My greatest joy in the art business is going to
these ranches", he relates. "It gives me a chance to enjoy the
camaraderie of these special men, and to keep the images of
their work sharp in my mind".
Multi-talented, Morton also enjoys
participating in Cowboy Poetry Gatherings. He has written four
or five of his own poems, but for the most part he likes to
recite other poet's works.

Pam Newberry
- Retreat Speaker
Starfish Kenya began April 2001 as a
response to the cry for help from the Body of Christ in
Kenya for the orphaned and abandoned children of that
country. During their first visit to Kenya, Roy and Pam
Newberry were overcome with the despair and hopelessness due
to the ravages of the AIDS virus leaving 2 million children
orphaned and hopelessness due to the ravages of the AIDS
virus leaving 2 million children orphaned and abandoned in
that country.
We make no claims of perfection or special talent, just a
hunger for more of Jesus in our lives and in His church. Why
God chose to do what he has done is more that I even knew to
ask Him to do. What happened to us, God placed in my heart
when I was just a teenager. As I pursued that dream for a
lifetime I discovered God's power to be very real and all
things do happen in His time. I pray that which God has
placed in your heart is coming to be as well.
