St. Joseph's Parish in Mosquero was hardly in existence at the turn of the century, but began to grow after the railroad to Dawson passed through it and became the set of the newly created Harding County in 1922.  In the early days, Mass was said here in a private oratory south of the present city limits.  Later, about 1918, the Church acquired the Public School building.  After some remodeling, this building became St. Joseph's church.  During the pastor of Father Assenmacher, the sanctuary, sacristy, and 2 bell towers were added, built of rock.  During the 1940's, a new ceiling was installed in the church and the adobe walls of the old part of the church were strengthened with a new foundation and a rock veneer.  Also added were a shrine in honor of Our Lady of Lourdes and considerable landscaping.
