Junior Livestock Show

1. All contestants must be bona fide Harding County 4-H or FFA Members for the current year.

2. Refer to Program for livestock entry times.

3. Minimum and Maximum weights for livestock are as follows:

Steer: Minimum 900 lbs.; Maximum none, pay on 1300 lbs.
Heifer: Minimum 750 lbs.; Maximum none
Swine: Minimum 200 lbs.; Maximum 270, pay on 260 lbs
Lamb: Minimum 80 lbs.; Maximum none, pay on 130 lbs.
Southdown: Minimum 70 lbs.; Maximum none.
Goat: No Minimum or Maximum

Hip height measurements will be done at the time of weighing, one time on the scale only.
One time over the scale for each animal.
Livestock will be allowed to weigh 2% under or over the weight limit. Any animal under or over the weight limit plus or minus the 2% will be disqualified.

4. Bill of sale must be furnished by exhibitor on each animal at time of weigh-in.

5. Weighing charge: $1.00 per animal.  Stall fee: $6.00 for all species. There will be no charge for poultry and rabbits.  A refund of $3.00 per head will be mailed back to the exhibitor if animal and stall has been properly cared for. Anyone who does not put their stall straw inside the enclosure will not receive the refund. An area will be provided for exhibitors to place used bedding and sheep clippage. Stalls must be cleaned by 12:00 noon, Saturday, or no refund will be issued. Refunds will be at the discretion of the Livestock Superintendents.

6. All animals must be off feed and water 1 hour before weighing.

7. Stall assignments will be made by Livestock superintendents.

8. All lambs and market goats must be fully shorn to ¼ inch within 2 weeks of the Fair.

9. Animals that have excessive wool, dirt or are wet will not be weighed until the problem is corrected. No blankets, etc. will be allowed when animals are weighed.

10. Lambs, pigs & kids will be under one year of age.

11. Market Goats horns must be tipped or dehorned prior to coming to the County Fair.

12 Animals exhibited in the 4-H & FFA division must be owned the minimum days before the first day of the State Fair as follows:

steers & breeding cattle 150 days;
sheep, swine & goats - 90 days,
horses - 90 days.

These animals must be identified by the Extension Agent or FFA Advisor no later than the deadline dates for ownership.

13. Before weighing or entering a market animal, exhibitors of must sign a certificate stating that, to the best of their knowledge, all feeds fed to the animal had no animal by-products."

      Breeding livestock should be bred 60 days prior to sale and guaranteed bred by a veterinarian.

      Heifer must be calfhood brucellosis vaccinated before they are one year old and identified by tag or tattoo

      Any new breed of animal coming to the fair will be classified as an exhibit animal only until the Fair board deems it necessary to form a new class.

17. Adults, Junior leaders and others may assist younger people in preparing animals for the show. However, the exhibitor must be present while the animal is being prepared.

18. Exhibitors will be allowed to use halters or collars in the show ring.

19. Any 4-H or FFA member who is not going to be available to show and sell their animal(s) at the Fair may make arrangements with another 4-H or FFA member(s) who is in good standing to care for and show their animal(s) but must get prior approval from the County Agent and/or FFA Advisor and the Fair Board . All efforts must be made by the 4-H or FFA member to show and sell their own animal(s) before this approval will be granted.

20. Unethical practices will not be tolerated and will be cause for disqualification of exhibitor. Any proceeds from the sale or show will be forfeited. The owner may be barred from future County Fairs.

21. Boosters may show only one animal of each species. Booster market animals will not be disqualified if they do not make the weight limits.

22 The judge has the right to bar any animal from the show that he feels does not meet show standards. After conferring together, the livestock superintendents and county agent or FFA Advisor may decide to disqualify any animal due to improper condition or if the exhibitor cannot control the animal. All animals must be sound and merchandisable.

23 Exhibitors are responsible for the care and showing of their animal.

24 If assistance is required in the ring, the Livestock Superintendent may appoint a 4-H or FFA member to assist.

25. All livestock must remain in stalls until released by superintendents. Early withdrawal will result in disqualification and withholding of money.

26. Horses on horse rack only.

27. All animals presented for exhibition shall be free from contagious diseases and shall, if necessary, be subjected to examination and possible rejection by the superintendents. If outside consultation is requested, a veterinarian will be called in at the expense of the exhibitor.

28. If a 4-H or FFA member sells an animal in the Fair sale and does not complete the project (including turning in complete records on that project), that 4-H or FFA member will not be eligible to sell that species of animal in the Fair sale the next year.

29. Livestock Showmanship judging will be at the same time as the showing of each species by an anonymous judge in the audience. Showmanship classes will be divided into Novice, Junior, & Senior ages. The judge will select the overall Showmanship winner for each species who will receive a buckle. Only the winners of each species will compete in the Master Showmanship contest.

30. A Master Showmanship class will be held at the conclusion of all livestock judging. Individuals entered in this contest will show one animal of each specie, not necessarily their own. An individual choosing not to show a particular species will receive a score of zero (0) for that species. There will be a Master Showman selected and award presented to that individual.

31. All decisions of the Superintendents are final.

32. Exhibitors will notify the Sale Superintendents, within one hour after the judging, of their intent to sell or not sell their animal in the Junior Livestock Sale. No Booster animal will be sold through the sale ring.

  • All livestock need to be checked out by the designated fair superintendent before they leave the fair grounds to ensure that the proper animals are received by buyers.

b. Project horses will be shown and judged during the 4-H & FFA Horse Show.
c. If it is deemed necessary by the horse Show Superintendent, 4-H'ers & FFA’s will be allowed to assist junior exhibitors in showing colts and horses.
d. All horse and colt classes are to be judged on breed characteristics.
Booster Class includes all classes and Showmanship.
e. Proof of ownership must be furnished by exhibitor prior to obtaining a stall.
f. Horses must have a horse certificate registered with the County Agent or FFA Advisor by April 15.
