Mosquero is located on State Highway 39.
Interstate 25 can be accessed 52 miles to the west of Wagon Mound.
Located on the high plains
of northeastern New Mexico, Mosquero is the county seat of
Harding County and is
the smallest county seat in New Mexico. The original townsite plat was
filed in July of 1908. |

Mosquero is conveniently located just a short drive
from the breathtaking views of the New Mexico ranges of the Rocky Mountains. |

Mosquero started as a settlement for the construction
of the Dawson Railway in 1906. This stretch of rail was built from Tucumcari to the
coal fields in Dawson by the Southern Pacific Railroad.
The railroad was removed in 1964. |
"Mosquero" is a Spanish word used to convey a swarm of
flies, fleas or mosquitoes. |

During the 1920s and
1930s dry ice was produced here because of the presence of the Bravo Dome, a huge
carbon dioxide gas field beneath
Harding County.

The community also boosts of the rich tradition of cattle ranching being
surrounded by some of the largest
cattle ranches in existence today. |

Today Mosquero is primarily a cattle ranching community
with County Government located in the historic Court House at Third and Pine
Streets. |
