Marie
Ellen Culbertson
On June 10, 2008, in Albuquerque, NM, Marie Ellen Culbertson
joined her Lord and Savior, and those who had gone before. She was born
September 22, 1917 in Derby, KS, to William B. and Lydia Foltz, and was
a small child when the family moved to Dalhart, TX, where she grew up.
They were a railroad family, her father being a fireman and later, an
engineer for the Rock Island Line. She graduated from Dalhart High
School in 1935. In 1937 Marie Ellen was selected the first Queen of
Dalhart's famous XIT Rodeo and Reunion.
She and W.O. Culbertson, Jr. were married December
28, 1940, whereupon she joined her husband on the ranch in Harding
County, NM. In 1950, the family moved to the newly acquired Park Springs
Ranch in San Miguel County, NM. There, "M.E." ranched with her husband,
raised her family, and served her community, until "retiring" in 1983
with W.O. to a small livestock farm near Las Vegas, N.M.
A member of the First United Methodist Church of Las Vegas, NM for over
58 years, she saw to it that all the family, her husband included, were
cleaned up, dressed up, and on time for the 40 mile drive to Sunday
school and church every week. In addition to her dedication to ranch,
family, and faith, Marie Ellen was an active member of the Order of the
Eastern Star, serving as New Mexico's Worthy Grand Matron in 1981-82.
She was always a willing and enthusiastic member of the community,
serving over the years in numerous capacities with the Cancer Society,
the Heart Fund, PEO, Woman's Club, the Methodist Church, and many
others.
Marie Ellen experienced the Great Depression and the
Dust Bowl, sometimes reminiscing, among other things, about how as a
teen-ager she and her mother would alternate going to church because
they had only one "dress-up" dress between them; nevertheless, she never
considered her life in those days as hard times. She saw her husband off
to the Second World War, seeing him briefly only once in four years, but
she never relented in her hope and optimism. She faced the isolation,
rains, droughts, rigors, and joys of life on the ranch, but never lost
her love for it. She followed and supported W.O.'s life of cowboying,
politics, and public service, all with unique grace and beauty. She
rode, cooked, ran the house, home-schooled, helped the less fortunate,
loved her God, and, in it all, made a home-place for family and a
welcome place for friends.
She is preceded in death by her father in 1984, her
mother in 2002; one sister, Mary Ann in 1991; and her husband, W.O.
Culbertson, Jr. in 1984. She is survived by one sister, Billie Jean
Ethridge and husband, Thomas B.; by four children W.O Culbertson III and
wife, Sue, Myles Culbertson and wife Georgia, Cary Culbertson, and Jane
Ellen Jones and husband, Bill; by eight grandchildren: Shannon Hoskovec
and husband Bill, Sue'llen Biddle and husband Daryl, Billie Jane Kennedy
and husband Jordan, Meredith Peterson and husband Matt, Avery
Culbertson, Miranda Culbertson, Cary Charles (Chili) Culbertson, and
Amber Jones; and by eight great-grandchildren: Mar'lyna Bibb, Khyren,
Lliam and Culbert Hoskovec, Kylie, Ian and Makalah Biddle, and Sophia
Peterson.
She will lie in state at the Rogers Chapel all day
Monday. Friends are welcome to join the family between 5:00 p.m., to
9:00 p.m., on Monday evening. Services will be held at the First United
Methodist Church, Las Vegas, NM, at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 17, 2008.
