Commancheros

American citizens were not the only traders who frequented Santa Fe and other parts of New Mexico. A significant illegal commerce added to New Mexican coffers for many decades, in the form of the Commanchero trade. Commanches and Apaches and others at times would bring the spoils of raiding including stolen horses, cattle, goods, and slaves (not necessarily black, BTW -- just whoever they caught) to the Commancharo traders at big swap and trade meets at kown locations and times. In fact, the Commanchero carts wore significant roads across the plains going to and from the more easterly meeting points.

New Mexico and Arizona contained many good people of various races, but were disproportionately populated with criminals and opportunists.
