La Frontera del Llano Scenic Byway Highlights Historic Harding County Rich in history and geography, western heritage and wide-open spaces, yet unencumbered by residents less than willing to work hard to make a living, Harding County in northeast New Mexico is also home to La Frontera del Llano, one of New Mexico’s newest scenic byways. La Frontera del Llano, which stretches deep and natural along State Road 39 through northeast New Mexico between Logan and Abbott, connects the Santa Fe Trail and Old US 66. It includes the Kiowa National Grasslands and its beautiful Mills Canyon; missionary churches located on historic ranches; miles of prairies, mesas and canyons; and a night sky is so clear the stars are beyond description. "The efforts of the early homesteaders dating back to the early days of the Santa Fe Trail are a significant chapter in the history of New Mexico," said Mike Cerletti, secretary of the New Mexico Tourism Department. "The folks in Logan, Mosquero, Abbott, Roy, Bueyeros and every ranch house that surrounds them are welcoming us into their homes. It is a pleasure not to be missed." As part of an ongoing series on New Mexico’s Scenic Byways published in New Mexico Magazine, La Frontera del Llano Scenic Byway, target of the October 2004 issue, was the featured guest of a public reception Thursday (Sept. 23, 2004),.
