The F.M. Hughes family came to this country in 1900. It was
just a range country then. They raised cattle and drove them
around to the different water holes. In
1901, they put the grade through for the
railroad. Christmas of
1902, the first train came through as far as
Roy. In 1907, F.M. Hughes built a house and store at the present site of Solano.
The first Sunday School was held at their home.
People began to come and settle and the town began
to grow until there were 4 stores, 4 saloons, 1 dry goods store and
Millinery store, 2 blacksmith shops, 2 lumber yards, 2 hotels, 1
newspaper - the Solano Herald.
Most of the people lived in tents and got water
from the railroad. The first well was put down by Bacilla
Garcia on what is known as the Ladd Ranch. Next, Joe Garcia
put one down on the Hern place. Then Mr. Hernden put one down
on the Cook place. They sold water to the people.
On July 28, 1907, the Conner family moved to the
community and built a 3 room house which was a gathering place for
friends.
The Burtons, Choates, Troups, Mackeys, Ross,
Millions, Allens, Morris' and Hortons were among the first settlers.
The first preacher was Rev. Alonzo Bright.
In 1912, they built the church.
Most of the work was donated. The ladies sold ice cream and
cake to the railroad men and helped to build the church. Mr.
Morris had charge of the first
Post
Office. The mail was poured out on a big box and each
person sorted out his own mail. The ladies soon ousted the
saloons. They built a parsonage and their first resident
pastor was Rev. Edwin Gaskill. |
