PALOUSE
By Richard H. Shaw
The Palouse School was built sometime before 1918 by homesteaders.  It was located on what is now the Shaw Ranch one mile west of the old homestead..

The teacher he remembers is Grace Oliver.  Her daughter is Happy Blackstein's mother.  Happy Blackstein's mother married Tommie Bauler.  Tommie's son lives in Tucumcari.  Nancy Fluhman's maiden name was Bauler.

Richard was 5 years old when he was at this school in 1923.  He remembers the first day when Tony & Warner Fluhman came to school.  Tony was around 6 and Warner was 8.  They could speak no English at all - the first day they just listened to other kids.  then they went to school at Mills for one year.

Richard's family moved away for 3 years and he went to a school called Independent and the teacher was Mrs. Pendleton (possibly Raymond Pendleton's sister).  Those he remembers attending the Palouse School are: Wyman & Hazel Madole, Nancy Bauler Fluhman, Clara Fluhman, the Johnson's (Bob, Earl, John, Jim) plus Richard's siblings: Albert, Robbie, Lucille, Mary, Jim.
Othere names listed in the 1930 census were: GM Pounds, Powells, Homer & Ray Schell, McDaniels, R.B. Johnston, Baulers, Shaws, Olsen, Fluhmans, Woods, Everetts, Ruckers.
