Florence Martinez

1921 - 2012

Florence Martinez, age 90, a resident of Roy, New Mexico, passed away at her residence on Monday, February 13, 2012. She was born on March 5, 1921, in Las Cruces, New Mexico,to the late Martin Lopez and Isabel Lopez Martinez. She was united in marriage on October 25, 1943, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, to Doroteo Martinez.  Florence was a homemaker, she loved to cook and you always found a meal when you visited her. Her favorite saying was, “Oh that is so keen.” Florence Martinez was a Spanish Teacher, Remedial Reading Teacher and Teachers Aid at Roy Public Schools for many years. She also served as Probate Judge for two terms at Harding County. She was Assistant County Clerk at Harding County for a period of time. She was also a secretary atthe Dry Ice Plant for several years.She was very active in the Lady Auxiliary Club, Cowbells Pinon Club, Women’s Club,and DAR Club. Florence’s hobbies were sewing, decorating, reading, making ceramics and loved to go to garage sales and second hand stores. She loved butterflies, loved to play Solitaire, Gin Rummy, and Monopoly with her children. She also loved to dance. Florence and Ted would go square dancing.  Florence was a lector and was very active in The Holy Family Church for many years. Florence went to Europe and the Holy Land for a month with her in-laws, Doroteo and Carolina Martinez.She is preceded in death by her parents: Martin and Isabel Lopez; brother: Martin Lopez Jr. She is survived by her husband Doroteo Martinez of the family home in Roy, New Mexico; son: David Martinez and wife Susie of Las Cruces, New Mexico; daughter: Dori Castañeda and husband Pete of Topeka, Kansas; son: Denis R. Martinez and wife Elizabeth of Roy, New Mexico; daughter: Gina Martinez and husband Walter of Aurora, Colorado; twenty- one grandchildren and twenty-seven great- grandchildren.Rosary devotional services were held on Thursday, February 16, 2012, at 7:00 pm at the Holy Family Church in Roy, New Mexico.Funeral services were held on Friday, February 17, 2012, at 10:00 am at the Holy Family Church in Roy, New Mexico, with Father C. John Brasher as celebrant.Interment took place at the Solano Cemetery in Solano, New Mexico, with the following serving as casket bearers: Vincent Rodriguez, Ted Rodriguez, Martin Rodriguez, Nick Rodriguez, Ryan Rodriguez, and Patrick Arellano.
